"Knitting -- The Master Plan" -- "Perfect Practice"

Another week, another gathering of knitters and crocheters at the local library.

Today I focused on practicing the stockinette stitch using size "17" needles and "super bulky" yarn.  I opted for Red Heart's "Vivid" yarn in the type of fun, bright colors that appeal to children.

I worked up the entire skein and will soon unravel it and set it aside for some future project.

I've read a few more pages of Knitting for Dummies and practiced k1 p1 with little success ... I get distracted as I work and things get a bit wonky.  I need to work on my concentration skills.

Tomorrow holds another session with the local library's needlecraft group. My bags are packed and ready to rock 'n roll with a nearly completed crocheted lapghan (the finish work needs to be done) for "Show & Tell," the lapghan's pattern to share with the group, and three sizes of needles with an assortment of yarns for practicing my knitting stitches.  I'm anxious to try out a pair of size "19" needles and size "6" "Super Bulky" yarn in bright primary colors ... it should be fun.

I imagine I'll need help learning to correct my mistakes ... I'm especially good at dropping an entire row of stitches from a needle and twisting them when I try to put them back on the needle.

I have not yet researched "Knitting" topics TBD on "YouTube" ... perhaps I can find a moment or two later this week.

Flash Fiction -- "Come as You Are" -- Miriam E. Waters

Come as You Are
by Miriam E. Waters

Her boots were thin and the cold seeped through the soles into her numbed feet.  She stomped first her left and then her right foot trying to wake them from their icy slumber.   She shivered, unable to control her trembling body.  She stuffed her chapped and cracked hands deep into the pockets of the filthy fatigue jacket she wore.

Layers of ragged clothing, her armor against the freezing winter wind and snow, provided scant protection.  The newspapers she’d tucked into her clothing served as insulation from the wet and the wind. The cold stole the breath from her lungs.  Tears formed at the corners of her eyes then leaked onto her sunken cheeks.

Light, voices singing and the blessed aroma of coffee escaped into the night when a man entered a reclaimed storefront. Peering into the space, she could see a small group perched on folding chairs set in neat rows and facing a podium.  Her heart beat hard and bruised itself against her ribs.

Someone had painted words upon the expansive windows facing the street.  She inched closer, trying to make out the message.  Bold strokes of red paint encouraged passersby to “Come as You Are.”

Her stomach constricted in response to the invitation
Come as I am?  Who’d have me?  A drunk, a whore, a broken wreck.  Filthy.  A stinking pile of rags.  Who’d want to be near me?  Oh, but the coffee, a warm place, compassion. If only…

The storefront’s door opened again.  An older man with greying hair stood on the sidewalk a few feet from her.  His brown eyes sought hers and offered a wrapped sandwich in his outstretched hand.

“Sister, come, join us.  There’s a place for you here.”

She leaned in and snatched the sandwich with a greedy claw.  Backing away from the man she shook her head, denying his invitation.  She devoured the sandwich as she kept her eyes on the man.

“Join us.  We’re all broken in some way.  You found your way to us.  This is where you belong.  We’re a safe haven for you on a night like tonight.”

The man nodded to her and returned to the warmth and hospitality of the storefront.

A freshet of tears coursed down her cheeks.

Could it be this simple?

She hesitated before turning and wandering away, back into the dark of night.

"Good Works Ministry's June 20, 2016 Meeting Update"

Another cozy group of three members was in attendance at the June 20th session of the LFBC’s Good Works Ministry.

Inspiration was was once again piled high on the coffee table in the form of sample projects and reference books.  These items included two super-frilly lace scarves and a lapghan by M.E.W.

The two scarves will be donated to “Team LFBC” for fund-raising to
benefit the 2017 American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" to be held next spring.  Contact M.E.W. if you'd like to try your hand at making one of these scarves ... donated yarn for the project is available.

The lapghan will be delivered to a veterans' home in support of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart (LAMORPH), Operation "We've Got You Covered."  The program provides support and comfort to hospitalized and wounded veterans by donating handmade lapghans (lap covers), head covers (hats and caps), pillows and other items.

Our resident photographer, M.G., was unable to attend the meeting ... soooo, no photos of the projects to share.

M.E.W. delivered yarn donated by the Whitesboro Dunham Public Library
"Needle Crafters" to the group. Some of the goods were divied up with M.G. receiving a collection of baby yarn odds 'n ends sure to be useful in the "Newborn Hats for Care Net" challenge. L.B. was able to find enough yellow/gold/white ombre yarn to create a lapghan ... perhaps for the "Veterans' Lapghan" challenge. M.E.W. selected some yarn to use to make mittens when she finally masters knitting mittens! Since J.P. was still using yarn from the last batch of donated goods, she opted to pass on this collection.

There is a very nice selection of cranberry and sand yarn that would work up into a nice lapghan.  Let M.E.W. mewaters315@gmail.com know if you would like to create a lapghan for the "Veterans' Lapghan" challenge using this yarn.

Reminder:  The LFBG's GWM's "yarn stash" can be found in Pastor Dave's office until we find a new home for it.  Feel free to take whatever yarn you feel could be used in a project.

FYI -- The group has collectively made 46 items so far this year!

A summary of the current challenges and project status is available from M.E.W. ... it's yours for the asking ... mewaters315@gmail.com

We're hoping each member of the GWM will propose a new challenge, offer to be a team leader for a given challenge and/or join the team for a specific challenge.  Let M.E.W. know if you would like to lead, join, or suggest a challenge ... mewaters315@gmail.com

"Knitting -- The Master Plan" -- "Session No. 3."

I attended another session of the local library's needlecraft group today ... it was a full house with eight participants!
I've got the faces down, now I'm working on the names of the group members.  It's easy to remember "Shirley," because she was the first member I met and she's been extremely helpful.

Today Shirley helped me to explore the mysteries and challenges of circular needles.  I was able to knit a few rows and picked up a few tips for working with the alternate form of knitting needles.  I'm saving the "YouTube" exploration for another day.

Shirley also provided some pointers for reversing mistakes ...
a hot topic for me.  I'm forever dropping one of the needles resulting in all of the stitches landing in my lap sans needle. Trying to make sense of picking up the stitches without twisting their orientation is a bit tricky. She promised more help with this topic next week.

After practicing for awhile, I decided it was time to pick up my crochet hook and work at something I know and love.  I'll resume my quest to learn to knit another day.
