"Good Works Ministry's August 15, 2016 Meeting Update"

JP, LB, MG and MEW enjoyed an afternoon session of needlecrafting fellowship at the LFBC Good Works Ministry's meeting held August 15.  

LB once again shared bounty from her garden.  She brought zucchini, peppers, and sweet sweet sweet cherry tomatoes. 

JP continued knitting booties … lovely in white.

LB completed the body of her "golden" lapghan. Next up ... the border.

MG continued working on a baby hat in soft pastels.

MEW shared two completed personal projects ... a "bulky" throw worked up in shades of teal and a lighter "bulky" throw in shades reminiscent of autumn ... orange, greens, and tan.

NOTE:  Due to the Labor Day holiday, the group will not meet on Monday; September 5, 2016. The next meeting of the group will be held on TBD from 1:00 to 3:00 PM … hope you can join us!

Most crocheters are familiar with the “Abbreviation Guides” published with most patterns.  “Slang,” however, is omitted from the guides.  “The Crochet Crowd” compiled the following guide to “Crochet Slang” in their “Keeping Up with the Crowd! A Hooker’s Journal.”  Some of these terms are just plain fun …

C2C -- Corner to Corner (A crochet stitch pattern.)

De-Stash -- Cleaning out your “Stash” of yarn of the stuff you had to have but will never use

Free Hand -- Crocheting something without a pattern

Frogging -- “Rippit, Rippit, Rippit!”  Rip it out baby!  For whatever reason you find yourself undoing your hard work, it is the art of Frogging.

Hooker -- A term of endearment for a crocheter.  One who “hooks” for enjoyment or compensation.

HOTH -- Hot Off the Hook

Stash -- Your collection of yarn, most often stashed in nooks and crannies around the house.

UFO -- Un-Finished Object

WIP -- Work in Progress

Yarn Bomb -- The art of crochet graffiti where an object or place is taken over with crochet art. 

Revisited -- Crochet -- "Stitch-cation Challenge"

Last summer I participated in a free worldwide crochet Stitch-cation Afghan “Challenge" sponsored by Red Heart Yarns and the on-line group “The Crochet Crowd.”  An eBook, "Stitch-cation Workbook," provides patterns and video guidance for the entire project.

The goal of the challenge is to introduce and reinforce new stitching techniques and patterns to the artist. The challenge's list of patterns includes the following:

-- Popcorn Stitch

-- Granny Square

-- Front Post Treble

-- Back Loops

-- Cross Stitched

-- Front Post Double Crochet Around Single Crochet

-- Raised Treble Crochet

-- Shells with Front and Back Stitches

-- Front Post Double Crochet

-- Double Crochet and Slip Stitch

Participants are provided with patterns for the ten unique squares and corresponding online videos.   The materials demonstrate the techniques for producing the squares of "easy" to “intermediate” levels of difficulty.

Each participant is required to complete *at least* two squares of each pattern using *at least* a total of eight different colors to complete the afghan. The artist then needs to devise a way to join the squares and add a decorative border of *at least* four rows.

The project was great fun.  See the photo below of my completed afghan. Notice the double frilled row on the border, the ruffle on the “join” of the squares, and the “roses” added to the border for emphasis.  

I used twelve colors for the project.  If I were to repeat the project I would limit my colors to eight for the body of the afghan and one for joining the squares.

"Good Works Ministry's July 18, 2016 Meeting Update"

Six members attended the July 18^th session of the LFBC’s Good Works Ministry.  M.V., welcome to the group!

We were roasted and toasted by the meeting’s end.  The temperature outside was 82 – inside the meeting room it was HOT, HOT, HOT, CALIENTE!  Perhaps we’ll meet in the Sanctuary next month – it’s several degrees cooler in there.

The heat didn’t deter our needlecrafters.  M.G. worked on “newborn” hats and helped R.G. with a child’s spring hat. Welcome back R.G.! 

As a nice surprise to the group, R.G. shared stunning painted tiles and promised to bring more to the next meeting.  J.P. worked on knitting two baby booties simultaneously and offered to roll yarn for new member M.V.’s first loom-knitted hat. L.B. worked on deciphering a pattern for a lapghan and is off to a good start.

M.E.W. barely had a chance to work on a private project – promised to her sister months ago – before helping both L.B. and M.V. with their projects.  She jumped from pillar to post trying to keep both members on track.

Several finished projects were submitted including two “newborn” crocheted hats in baby blue by M.G., a loom-knit hat by L.B. in greens and black, and two “finished” lapghans by M.E.W. … one worked up in shades of green and the other using the luxurious new “blanket” yarn by Bernat in a medley of brown/tan/cream.

M.G.’s “newborn” caps will be donated to CareNet as part of the “10 Pairs of Booties & a Take-Me-Home Cap” challenge.

L.B.’s hat will be included in one of the winter hat drives, perhaps for the Refugee Center, the Utica Rescue Mission, or a ministry that serves area veterans as part of the “Winter Hat” challenge.

M.E.W.’s lapghans will be delivered to a veterans' home in support of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart (LAMORPH), Operation "We've Got You Covered."

There is a very nice collection of cranberry and sand yarn that would work up into a nice lapghan.  Let M.E.W. mewaters315@gmail.com know if you would like to create a lapghan for the "Veterans' Lapghan" challenge using this yarn.

Reminder:  The LFBG's GWM's "yarn stash" can be found in Pastor Dave's office until we find a new home for it.  Feel free to take whatever yarn you feel could be used in a project.

""Knitting -- The Master Plan -- What big eyes you have ..."

OK ... my afghan project ... I'm almost back to the point I'd been when I discovered I needed to R-I-P-P-I-T out!  I need to finish the current and complete 25% of the next rounds to be back where I need to be ...

I visited another local library the evening before last to attend a "drumming" session -- what fun!  

While at the library I discovered a glass display case filled with projects completed by the library's needlework group. Now, I've upped the ante ... not only do I want to learn how to knit mittens, but I want them to be in the "Fair Ilse" style.  These mittens have beautiful patterns that incorporate a motif in one or more colors into a piece.

I had another R-I-P-P-I-T adventure at Tuesday's needlecrafters' meeting.  I'm attempting my first project -- an orange cotton "Honeycomb" dust/dish/counter/what-have-you cloth -- and realized I'd made a mistake ... soooo, I carefully pulled out about three inches of knitting and replaced the piece on the needle.  I needed some help from Shirley to get my yarn "tail" in the right position.  Thanks, Shirley!


Sooo, my knitting program is still "on hold" until I complete the afghan.
