"Thursday; July 21, 2016 -- Organ Grinder & Monkey Lamp"

A "Fabulous Find" in need of TLC ... there is a break in the cast iron and the wires have been cut on this interesting, unique lamp -- an Organ Grinder and his Monkey.

Wish I knew how to repair this piece offered for sale on eBay ...

"Good Works Ministry's July 18, 2016 Meeting Update"

Six members attended the July 18^th session of the LFBC’s Good Works Ministry.  M.V., welcome to the group!

We were roasted and toasted by the meeting’s end.  The temperature outside was 82 – inside the meeting room it was HOT, HOT, HOT, CALIENTE!  Perhaps we’ll meet in the Sanctuary next month – it’s several degrees cooler in there.

The heat didn’t deter our needlecrafters.  M.G. worked on “newborn” hats and helped R.G. with a child’s spring hat. Welcome back R.G.! 

As a nice surprise to the group, R.G. shared stunning painted tiles and promised to bring more to the next meeting.  J.P. worked on knitting two baby booties simultaneously and offered to roll yarn for new member M.V.’s first loom-knitted hat. L.B. worked on deciphering a pattern for a lapghan and is off to a good start.

M.E.W. barely had a chance to work on a private project – promised to her sister months ago – before helping both L.B. and M.V. with their projects.  She jumped from pillar to post trying to keep both members on track.

Several finished projects were submitted including two “newborn” crocheted hats in baby blue by M.G., a loom-knit hat by L.B. in greens and black, and two “finished” lapghans by M.E.W. … one worked up in shades of green and the other using the luxurious new “blanket” yarn by Bernat in a medley of brown/tan/cream.

M.G.’s “newborn” caps will be donated to CareNet as part of the “10 Pairs of Booties & a Take-Me-Home Cap” challenge.

L.B.’s hat will be included in one of the winter hat drives, perhaps for the Refugee Center, the Utica Rescue Mission, or a ministry that serves area veterans as part of the “Winter Hat” challenge.

M.E.W.’s lapghans will be delivered to a veterans' home in support of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart (LAMORPH), Operation "We've Got You Covered."

There is a very nice collection of cranberry and sand yarn that would work up into a nice lapghan.  Let M.E.W. mewaters315@gmail.com know if you would like to create a lapghan for the "Veterans' Lapghan" challenge using this yarn.

""Knitting -- The Master Plan -- What big eyes you have ..."

OK ... my afghan project ... I'm almost back to the point I'd been when I discovered I needed to R-I-P-P-I-T out!  I need to finish the current and complete 25% of the next rounds to be back where I need to be ...

I visited another local library the evening before last to attend a "drumming" session -- what fun!  

While at the library I discovered a glass display case filled with projects completed by the library's needlework group. Now, I've upped the ante ... not only do I want to learn how to knit mittens, but I want them to be in the "Fair Ilse" style.  These mittens have beautiful patterns that incorporate a motif in one or more colors into a piece.

I had another R-I-P-P-I-T adventure at Tuesday's needlecrafters' meeting.  I'm attempting my first project -- an orange cotton "Honeycomb" dust/dish/counter/what-have-you cloth -- and realized I'd made a mistake ... soooo, I carefully pulled out about three inches of knitting and replaced the piece on the needle.  I needed some help from Shirley to get my yarn "tail" in the right position.  Thanks, Shirley!


Sooo, my knitting program is still "on hold" until I complete the afghan.

Drats!  I've discovered a MAJOR error in my current project and need to R-I-P-P-I-T out! 

I'm lucky to have a buffer between now and the completion due date ... it will allow me to fix the error.  

Sooo, my knitting program is "on hold" until I can correct my work and complete the piece.  Again, <Insert BIG Sigh Here!>.

"Knitting -- The Master Plan" -- "Hiatus ... continued"

I continued my break from knitting by focusing on crocheting at today's meeting of the local library's needlecrafting group.  I worked on finishing a large project ... I thought I made great progress during the two-hour session only to discover an error that must be r-i-p-p-p-t out and rehooked.  <Insert Sigh Here!>

I do have a new weapon in my arsenal ... a slim "at a glance" reference card for knitting stitches and hints.  It's come in handy several times since I received it as a gift last week.

The vintage mitten pattern I plan to use is rather daunting at this point in my adventure.  I tried to read and follow the instructions, but I'm not "there" yet.  Sooooo, I backed off and found a booklet filled with textured knitting "samplers" that can be used as dishcloths once completed.  Not too sexy a project, but I need to start somewhere other than with a scarf!

"Living Faith Bible Church Good Works Ministry -- June 2016 Recap"

"Good Works Ministry's June 20, 2016 Meeting Update"

Another cozy group of three members was in attendance at the June 20th session of the LFBC’s Good Works Ministry.  

Inspiration was was once again piled high on the coffee table in the form of sample projects and reference books.  These items included two super-frilly lace scarves and a lapghan by M.E.W.

The two scarves will be donated to “Team LFBC” for fund-raising to

benefit the 2017 American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" to be held next spring.  Contact M.E.W. if you'd like to try your hand at making one of these scarves ... donated yarn for the project is available.

The lapghan will be delivered to a veterans' home in support of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart (LAMORPH), Operation "We've Got You Covered."  The program provides support and comfort to hospitalized and wounded veterans by donating handmade lapghans (lap covers), head covers (hats and caps), pillows and other items.

Our resident photographer, M.G., was unable to attend the meeting ... soooo, no photos of the projects to share.

M.E.W. delivered yarn donated by the Whitesboro Dunham Public Library

"Needle Crafters" to the group. Some of the goods were divied up with M.G. receiving a collection of baby yarn odds 'n ends sure to be useful in the "Newborn Hats for Care Net" challenge. L.B. was able to find enough yellow/gold/white ombre yarn to create a lapghan ... perhaps for the "Veterans' Lapghan" challenge. M.E.W. selected some yarn to use to make mittens when she finally masters knitting mittens! Since J.P. was still using yarn from the last batch of donated goods, she opted to pass on this collection.

"Good Works Ministry's June 6, 2016 Meeting Update"

We had a cozy group of five members in attendance at the June 6th session of the LFBC’s Good Works Ministry.  Our long-distance member C.O. from Connecticut joined us for the first time!  She met two of our members, J.P. and L.B., and they were able to share their experiences and begin to get to know one another.  Welcome, C.O.!

Inspiration was piled high on the coffee table in the form of sample projects created by group members.  These items included three cowls and a prayer shawl by a very busy C.O., a knitted helmet hat for children by J.P., L.B.’s colorful  first loom-knitted hat, as well as two hats and two super-frilly lace scarves by M.E.W.  M.G. snapped several pictures of these projects to share with the entire Good Works Ministry team.

Copies of Knitting for Dummies and Crocheting for Dummies as well as booklets on afghans and lapghans for veterans and prayer shawls were available for reference.  In addition, J.P. provided copies of the knitting pattern for the knitted helmet hat for children.  

C.O.’s cowls and prayer shawl were added to our inventory to use for a future challenge.  She also shared an amigurumi Christmas Mouse, complete with Christmas stocking, and a shower favor featuring two impossibly itty-bitty baby booties.

M.E.W.’s two scarves will be donated to “Team LFBC” for fund-raising at the 2016 American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life"  to be held June 11th and 12th in Sauquoit, New York.

M.G. began crocheting a cap for a newborn baby while J.P. completed her second set of baby booties for the “Newborn Hats & Booties for Carenet  Challenge.”   L.B. focused on her second loom-knitted hat for the “Christmas Hats for the Refugee Center Challenge” and recommended the activity to C.O.  M.E.W. provided C.O. with a quick overview of loom-knitting hats and a copy of the team’s “Resource Binder” to fill with reference and inspirational materials.

M.E.W. shared her wonky practice piece of knitted work.  In her quest to learn to knit, she’s managed to master casting on, the knit, purl, and stockinette stitches, changing yarn colors, and casting off.  Her goal for the next meeting is to learn to alternate knit and purl stitches in the same row.  Hopefully, her next practice piece won’t be so wonky and will resemble actual knitting.

Once again, M.E.W. jumped from pillar to post without really accomplishing anything on her knitting, but still having fun.   She voiced her intention to begin a challenge to complete five lapghans for clients in U.S. Veterans’ hospitals and invited others to join her.  Watch for a posting of a simple pattern to use for this challenge.

Mark your calendars ... our next session is scheduled for the third Monday in June -- Monday, June 20, 2016, 1:00 to 3:00 PM!  We hope you’ll join us!
